FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Revised 13 April 2017 (New or revised FAQs in orange)

WHAT IS THE TEMPORAL LOGBOOK?
The Temporal Logbook is an unofficial and unauthorized not-for-profit short-story collection featuring original Doctor Who fiction by new and upcoming writers.  Each volume features stories involving all twelve incarnations of the Doctor, in a series of exciting adventures across space and time. The Logbooks are published by Canadian publisher Pencil Tip Publishing. Net proceeds from each collection will be donated to a chosen charity.

The first Temporal Logbook was published in 2015 and the net proceeds from that publication was donated to the Positive Living Society of British Columbia (formerly BC Persons with AIDS Society).

The Temporal Logbook II will be published in 2017 and the net proceeds from this publication will be donated to the MDABC (Mood Disorders Association of British Columbia).

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THE TERM “PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED”?
“Previously unpublished” means that your story should not have been already published in any medium prior to being published in The Temporal Logbook.  This includes stories appearing in print (hard and soft copy); as part of another collection, book, magazine, newsletter etc.; published online in any format (e.g. blog, website, forum, social media, fan fiction site, forum, mailing list); or published electronically (e.g. CD-Rom, computer game, e-zine).  Stories are to be new, original and first time compositions.

THE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES SAY “BASED ON DOCTOR WHO AS BROADCAST ON BBC TELEVISION”. DOES THIS MEAN NO USE OR REFERENCES TO COMICS, BOOKS, CONTINUITY OR COMPANIONS?
Yes. Stories should only make use of the characters as featured on the BBC television series (this includes the original series and the post-2005 series). Stories should use television Doctors 1 through 12 (Hartnell to Capaldi). You can feature any of the companions that have appeared in the television series alongside Doctors 1-12.

Submissions can include any monsters, villains, adversaries that have appeared in the television series. However, be creative. Try and develop your own aliens, monsters, villains or foes. Using your own antagonist(s) will be a better gauge of your abilities as a writer than relying on old monsters / villains. Having said that, however, we are not opposed to publishing a story featuring a returning antagonist from the TV series.

We would prefer you not to submit continuity-laden stories; stories that are sequels to television stories; or stories that team up the Daleks and the Cybermen invading Gallifrey. Be original and be creative.

Do not use, or refer to any elements, continuity or creations from the Virgin or BBC novels, Doctor Who comic strips, Doctor Who Magazine, animated Doctor Who (e.g. Scream of the Shalka, Dreamland), online audios (e.g. Scream of the Shalka), Doctor Who stage plays, Doctor Who or Dalek annuals (World Distributors or Panini), the two 1960s Peter Cushing movies, or Big Finish audios. Any stories featuring any of these elements will be automatically rejected.

HOW MANY STORIES ARE YOU PUBLISHING?
We are publishing 13 stories – one for each television Doctor including the War Doctor (eg. Doctors 1-12 aka Hartnell, Toughton, Pertwee, Baker, Davison, Baker, McCoy, McGann, Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi and Hurt).

I LIVE OUTSIDE OF CANADA.  CAN I STILL SUBMIT A STORY?
Yes, we will accept stories from anywhere in the world providing the story is written in English.

ARE YOU ACCEPTING POETRY?
No.  We are not including poetry in the collection.

ARE YOU ACCEPTING SCRIPTS?
No.  As mentioned numerous times in the Submission Guidelines we are only accepting short stories.  Please note a script is not a short story.  These are two completely different types of writing.

ARE YOU ACCEPTING SCREENPLAYS?
No.  As mentioned numerous times in the Submission Guidelines we are only accepting short stories.  Please note a screenplay is not a short story.  These are two completely different types of writing.

IS THERE A WORD LIMIT?
Yes. Submissions should be in the range of 5000-8000 words.

SHOULD THE STORY BE IN CHAPTERS?

WHAT AGE RANGE SHOULD THE STORIES BE TAILORED TO?
Stories should be aimed at the same level and/or above as in the New Adventures.

CAN I SEND IN MULTIPLE PROPOSALS?

  1. I created my own “companion” (a wish fulfillment of myself actually) and used to interact along with the shows while I watched. Now I may get to use my “wish self” in an original way.

  2. Truly fantastic ~ not only to receive the opportunity to share in further adventures, but to do so to benefit a great cause. Thanks (from all of us) for the opportunity.
